Reading -
  • Jeremiah will continue to be given time and freedom to pursue his own reading interests, as well as many resources for deepening his considerable reading skills, both in print and online.  
  • Jeremiah continues to read as he chooses.  He has chosen selections including:
  • National Geographic Kids magazine.
  • Pokemon Manga novel.
  • Flight School (get more info from book).
  • Nintendo Power magazine.
  • The project books that came with his Snap Circuit set.
  • Assorted articles, blogs, and conversations online. 
  • Text-rich games such as Zoo Tycoon, Donkey Konga, and Animal Crossing.
  • Several books from the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series.
  • Environmental reading, in a variety of situations.
  • Reading subtitles in English and Japanese while watching assorted subtitled Japanese anime series, such as (give examples).
  • Reading onscreen lyrics online while learning songs he enjoys.
  • We will continue to read aloud in various family groupings, as desired.
  • We read aloud together through a variety of online and gaming sources throughout this quarter.
  • He will continue to be supported as he explores what he has read through discussion, critical review of ideas, cross-referencing, play, art, and other forms of experimentation.
  • Jeremiah began a journal, inspired by Diary of a Wimpy Kid
  • Jeremiah was inspired to begin creating comic strips, inspired by the newspaper comics and manga novels.
  • Jeremiah's reading factored strongly into his play and conversation throughout the quarter.
  • His interests in reading independently for pleasure and information will be encouraged. His parents will continue to offer opportunities for expanding and maturing his reading and comprehension skills.
  • Jeremiah continues to read from a wide variety of sources, as detailed above.  He reads very near or at an adult level, for both pleasure and information.
  • Jeremiah has found many opportunities for reading at his level, and we continue, as a family, to embrace a lifestyle rich in text and literature.
  • His parents will facilitate by providing ample resources and experiences to support Jeremiah's love of reading, by being available to discuss and explore what he has read, to continue to read aloud to him as he wishes, and to answer his questions as needed.
  • We have traveled out of state, attended an unschooling conference, and visited the NYS Musuem, various restaurants, a bookstore, and the Erie Canal.  
  • Jeremiah reads naturally and with ease in all day-to-day situations.
