Arithmetic

Arithmetic -

  • Jeremiah will continue to be supported as he deepens his independent explorations of mathematical concepts.
  • Jeremiah has explored a variety of mathematical pursuits throughout this quarter, and has been supported as he needed and/or requested.
  • He has been offered a variety of resources throughout this quarter, including computer programming, books, board and computer games, tools, manipulatives, discussion, money, and practical opportunities to further explore mathematical concepts and skills.
  • He will continue to have free access to online games and lessons such as Khan Academy videos, PBS Homework Hotline, and Math for the Real World, with parental support to answer questions and offer suggestions as he explores.
  • Jeremiah explored via several math- intensive games throughout this quarter, including:
  • Animal Crossing – Real-life mathematics operations while living in a community; buying and selling; earning money through gathering, harvesting, travel, barter, and jobs; making donations; and paying off several mortgages and creating a bank account.
  • Zoo Tycoon - Real life mathematical operations while running a zoo; buying animals and habitat features; hiring and paying various employees; caretaking and beautification for profit.
  • Lemonade World Real life mathematical operations while operating a lemonade stand; choosing how to budget funds (advertising, supplies, profit); ratios of lemons:water:sugar:ice to attract the greatest number of customers at various times and temperatures in pursuit of maximum profit over a month's “time”.

  • In addition, Jeremiah spent time this quarter independently experimenting with binary code communication using online translators; and also did extensive research into the operations of claw, prize, and vending machines, including specifics of win/loss ratios, diagrams, charts, and measurements. He experimented with creating mockups of his own, and in real-life experimentation to test what he learned.
  • His parents will continue to facilitate by providing many real-life and virtual opportunities for Jeremiah to hone and broaden his understanding of money, fractions, decimals, and percentages; geometry and elementary algebra; square and cube roots; and statistics; as well as offering opportunities for him to continue strengthening his ability to perform mathematical operations he is already familiar with.

  • Jeremiah has been afforded opportunities to explore some or all of these concepts through building; baking; budgeting, saving, and spending  money; gaming; travel; political campaigns and conversation; graphs and charts; calculating sales tax and other percentages; and others.

  • He will be included in family budget discussions in greater depth, and will continue to have a weekly allowance and guidance as needed in budgeting it.

  • Jeremiah is becoming more aware of adult budgeting. We talk openly with him about expenses and obligations, and our various savings plans.

  • Jeremiah often helps to decide on and purchase weekly provisions.

  • He continues to save and budget his own allowance, and to plan entrepreneurial means for earning more money.
